Together, we took 250,000 steps of support for baby loss

A heartfelt team challenge has raised £757 for Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals Charity’s (WHH Charity) Willow Tree Hub Appeal – supporting families facing the loss of a baby.

Members of the Butterfly Team walked a collective 250,000 steps over one week to reflect the estimated 250,000 pregnancies lost each year in the UK.

Every step taken was a tribute to the babies and families behind that figure, with funds raised going towards the creation of the Willow Tree Hub – a calm, purpose-designed facility in the grounds of Warrington Hospital that will provide comfort, privacy and specialist support away from the busy clinical setting.

The hub will include counselling rooms, private space for families, and a peaceful remembrance garden. It will also house a Rainbow Clinic offering emotional support and monitoring for those experiencing pregnancy after loss.

Debbie Yates, Bereavement Midwife at WHH, took part in the challenge. She said: “Being part of the Steps of Support challenge has been a meaningful experience. I’ve worked in the NHS for 42 years, with the last eight spent as a bereavement midwife. On my walks I’ve seen butterflies, robins and white feathers – all symbols of comfort in the baby loss community. Each step felt like a quiet tribute. I’m proud to support the Willow Tree Hub, which will provide much-needed space for families navigating the heartbreak of baby loss.”

The Willow Tree Hub Appeal aims to raise £200,000 to fund the new facility, which will be built next to the hospital’s Maternity Department.
