New multi faith cabinets enhance spiritual care at WHH
Wednesday 30 July 2025
Two bespoke multi faith cabinets have been introduced at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals (WHH) to strengthen the spiritual support available across both hospital sites.
Now located in the chapel and prayer rooms at Warrington Hospital and Halton Hospital, the solid oak units are designed to reflect and respect the wide range of beliefs represented within the hospital community. Each drawer is marked with a faith symbol and contains meaningful items such as holy texts, prayer cards and information about the relevant faith tradition.
Funded by Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals Charity, the initiative aims to improve access to spiritual resources – even when a chaplain is not immediately available – offering comfort, guidance and connection to patients, visitors and staff.
The cabinets were created by Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s (GMMH) Benchmark team. Benchmark is part of the GMMH’s Recovery Pathways service, which supports people living with a mental health condition through creative, skills-based projects that promote wellbeing and purpose.
David Lowery, Workshop Manager at Benchmark, said: “We’re proud to see these cabinets now in place at WHH. The people we work with put real time and thought into every detail, knowing their efforts will provide quiet comfort to those going through challenging times. Our hope is that the cabinets will bring reassurance and practical support to anyone who needs it.”
The WHH Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care Team offers confidential emotional, pastoral and religious support to anyone within the hospital setting – regardless of background or belief. The new cabinets allow individuals to access spiritual tools at any time, particularly valuable during moments of distress or reflection.
Paul Klein, Chaplain at WHH, said: “These thoughtfully designed cabinets are more than just a place to store items – they’re a sign that every persons beliefs and values are recognised and respected. Whether someone is seeking prayer, information or a quiet moment of reflection, these resources are now right at their fingertips.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the Benchmark team for their craftsmanship and to WHH Charity for funding this meaningful addition to our hospital environments.”
