George’s lasting legacy continues to welcome patients, visitors and staff at Halton Hospital

A generous legacy left by former patient George Lloyd helped transform catering facilities at Halton Hospital, creating a welcoming space that continues to be enjoyed by patients, visitors and staff.
George, a Runcorn resident, passed away in hospital in May 2013. After experiencing the care and support provided to both himself and his wife Muriel over many years, George decided to leave part of his estate to the organisations that had helped them.
His generosity helped fund an £80,000 refurbishment of the catering facilities at Halton Hospital.
The transformation included new lighting, flooring and decoration, feature walls and new furniture, including sofas, stools, tables and chairs. A coffee lounge was also created, providing refreshments and light snacks outside normal opening hours.
The refurbished George Lloyd Restaurant opened in May 2016.
George was born in Runcorn in 1934 and attended schools in the town before beginning his career with ICI. He later retired at the age of 50 to care for his wife Muriel, who had developed Parkinson's disease.
As Muriel’s health deteriorated, the couple spent increasing amounts of time attending hospital appointments and staying in hospital. While Muriel was receiving care, George spent much of his time in the hospital canteen, where staff treated him with great kindness and made him feel welcome.
After Muriel died in 2008, the canteen remained an important part of George’s life. He continued to visit, including Christmas Day, and staff always welcomed and looked after him. Their kindness stayed with
George and helps explain why he chose to leave a gift to Halton Hospital’s catering department when he died in 2013.
George’s generosity helped create a space enjoyed by thousands of people, and his story is a reminder of the lasting difference a gift in a will can make.
